Frederieke Taylor gallery presents CHRISTY RUPP: Wake Up and Smell the Benzene, New sculpture and works on paper. This exhibition features a new series of collaged landscapes, a study in scrambled geology and space. Combining images that come from old magazines, stockholders' reports from oil companies, kids' science books, current magazines and catalogs, as well as some handmade papers, the collages depict our modern landscape showing the devastating effects of our technological advancement. Also on view will be hand-felted wool portraits of oil containers. By using this ancient textile fabrication to create these sculptures, the artist refers to our dependence on fossil fuels and a careless mindset of over-consumption and comfort.

Christy Rupp is known as a social and political art activist. She participated in the legendary "The Times Square Show" and "The Real Estate show" of 1979-80 and was affiliated with Colab and Group Material. Past shows include "Democracy Was Fun & the L.A. Road Show" at White Box Gallery, NYC; "The Downtown Show" at the Grey Art Gallery, NYC; "The Drop" at Exit Art, NYC; "Hybrid Fields" at the Sonoma County Museum, Santa Rosa CA; "Person of the Crowd", at the Neuberger Museum SUNY Purchase, NY and "Ornithology" at the Contemporary Art Galleries, UConn, Storrs, CT. Christy Rupp will participate in the upcoming exhibition "Dead or Alive" at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York as well as the "10th Anniversary Celebration" exhibition at MassMOCA Kidspace, MA; both opening in Spring 2010. She received an Anonymous Was a Woman Grant in 2009.
