PAULINE WIERTZ, Wunderkammer 8 December 2006- 13 January 2007 Transforming its project room into a contemporary Wunderkammer, a veritable treasure trove, Frederieke Taylor gallery will show sculptures and jewelry by Dutch ceramic artist, Pauline Wiertz. This is the first U.S. show of this prominent Dutch artist. Pauline Wiertz is inspired by the passionate traveler/collector from previous centuries who would bring home exotic treasures and jewels from far away places, including natural treasures such as shells, rocks, corals and animals as souvenirs. The collector would exhibit these treasures in the so called Wunderkammer, or chamber of wonders, in cabinets filled with curiosities. Today, Pauline Wiertz finds similar treasures in grocery stores and outdoor markets. As an artist and passionate cook, she brings home shopping bags full of vegetables, shellfish and sculptural chicken legs that often end up in her studio instead of the kitchen. At ‘brocantes’ near her house in Limoges, the porcelain area of France, she also fervently searches for old porcelain cups and dishes. All these elements are combined to create fantastical sculptural still-lives which are cast in porcelain, evoking the sumptuous still-life paintings by the Dutch old masters of the Golden Age. Decorated with blue-white patterns of flowers, feathers, butterflies or Rococo motifs, the sculptures are reminiscent of traditional delftware, porcelain from the Far East or the eighteenth century Rococo porcelain produced by the Meissen factory in Germany. Similar decorations are used by Pauline Wiertz on the ceramic beads with which she creates rings, earrings and necklaces. Equally well known for her jewelry as for her sculpture, Pauline Wiertz has shown her work in various museums and institutions in the Netherlands and internationally in Europe, Asia and South America. A catalog will accompany the exhibition and will be available at the gallery.
